Items are crucial in Teamfight Tactics, and a lot of the community is unsure how the item drops are calculated versus the gold drops. Fortunately, a Riot designer has spoken up about these details and explained a bit more of how the game works.
How does the item and gold drop work?
Riot Mort (@Mortdog) says that the gold drops are important for the “long term health” of Teamfight Tactics. Riot wants every game to feel different, and they think this is the solution. In his tweet, Mort adds a diagram that shows what should spawn for every player at the end of the third round of PvE. A player that has no items drop in the first three rounds will have a guarantee of 9 gold to compensate.
The Krugs, Raptors, and Wolves all drop 1 or more items or 5 gold. Some players are experiencing no drops whatsoever on these rounds. Riot Mort confirms that this is not working as intended and that a hotfix will be applied as soon as it is ready. The first dragon, Rift Herald, and Elder all contain item drops.
“Bad luck protection”
RNG is a big factor in Teamfight Tactics, including with item drops. In replies to the tweet, Riot Mort explains that there is a sort of “bad luck protection.” Players that do not receive items earlier in the game become increasingly likely to receive items later in the game. Another form of “bad luck protection” that players and devs have pointed out are your increased chances of picking first in the shared draft.
Although you may lose some hit points early in the game, it is not as devastating as you may think. A little early loss in hit points puts you earlier in the release cycle of the draft. This means that other players, who may be on top due to early item RNG, do not get to pick their ideal items later. So players that may not get early items and get gold drops instead are able to pick their items. This is better than relying on RNG to drop what they need for some.
